International perspectives on community regeneration

a Scottish Centre for Regeneration Masterclass

Edinburgh International Conference Centre

Thursday 23rd February 2006

The challenges of community regeneration are not unique to Scotland but when considering practice further afield, rarely do we look at examples beyond Europe and North America.

The Scottish Centre for Regeneration is pleased to host two provocative and inspirational international presentations on community regeneration practice in Africa, Asia and Australasia.

This unique opportunity will offer practitioners in community regeneration the chance to reflect on different perspective on what really works for community regeneration and to challenge current thinking in Scotland.

Linda Mbonambi is an Urban Renewal Planner in Durban, South Africa. He leads an integrated development programme in Inanda/Kwamashu/Ntuzuma area (INK) – areas of high poverty and unemployment, and home to one-fifth of Durban’s youthful population. INK is now regarded internationally as an exemplar programme with two key outcomes – an improved quality of life, and better opportunities for residents to take charge of their own lives. We are delighted that Linda will be joined by Dr Michael Sutcliffe, City Manager for Durban.

Anthony Kelly has worked and written on development issues for thirty five years. He taught development practice at the University of Queensland for 25 years, leaving to join Oxfam Australia to contribute more actively to the Australian Aboriginal cause. Influenced by the Gandhian tradition, much of his international work has been in Asia, particularly India, and his contribution will focus on theory and innovative practice in the south.
